Dr. Yasushi Furuta, a councilor of the Japan Society of Hot Spring Science, will explain hot springs from the perspective of earth science in an interesting and easy-to-understand manner.
Unlike today, when hot water comes out of the tap immediately, in the past, "heating the bath" was a laborious task. In such times, "hot springs that naturally gush out without heating" must have been an even more amazing existence. Some places even worship the hot springs themselves or the precipitates of hot spring components as deities.
Nowadays, it is common to "drill hot springs for bathing use," so hot water is systematically drawn from the source to the bathtub, and in many cases, we cannot see where the hot spring gushes out and how it is transported to the bathtub. Therefore, while we are familiar with the hot springs filled in the bathtub, we rarely have the opportunity to learn about the origin and nature of hot springs as natural phenomena.
