The total number of spring sources in Gifu Prefecture is 506 according to the Ministry of the Environment's statistics as of 2013. This number ranks 14th nationwide. It includes not only naturally occurring hot springs but also those obtained through drilling.
The number of hot spring areas is calculated based on locations with accommodation facilities. There are also many day-use hot spring facilities in the prefecture, so if you include such facilities, the number of places called "hot springs" rises to nearly 100.
The discharge volume of hot springs is 75,367 liters per minute, which means that nearly 400 drums of hot springs are gushing out every minute throughout Gifu Prefecture.
There are four spring sources in Gifu Prefecture that discharge steam gas. In places like Shirakawa Village's Oshirakawa Onsen and Takayama City's Shin-Hotaka Onsen Nakaodistrict, hot springs are created by passing water through high-temperature steam.
