From Gifu! Hot Spring Sanatorium

I've heard that hot springs can sometimes worsen illnesses. Is that true?

Hot springs are not always beneficial to health. They can sometimes worsen symptoms during illness, so caution is necessary.
The diseases for which hot spring use should be avoided are called "contraindications," and the following are the criteria indicated by the government as a general guideline.
However, whether or not to use hot springs should be comprehensively judged based on the type and condition of the illness, so it is recommended to consult with your "primary care physician" before going to a hot spring.

Contraindications for bathing

  • Acute diseases (especially with fever) ・ Active tuberculosis ・ Malignant tumors ・ Severe heart disease
  • Respiratory failure ・ Renal failure ・ Hemorrhagic diseases ・ Severe anemia ・ During pregnancy (especially early and late stages)
  • Sulfur springs, acidic springs for those with sensitive skin and mucous membranes

Contraindications for drinking

  • Chloride springs, sodium salt springs for those with kidney disease, hypertension, or edema.
  • Sulfate springs, carbon dioxide springs, sulfur springs during diarrhea.
